The Atlanta Falcons mounted a second half comeback on the road against the New Orleans Saints in front of a national audience on Monday night, but came up short on the road 35-27. The Falcons dropped to 4-3, while the Saints cruised to a perfect 7-0 record.
Although Atlanta entered the half down 28-14, Matt Ryan found Roddy White early in the third quarter for a long 68-yard touchdown to bring the score to 28-21. Jason Elam’s field goal brought the Falcons within four points of tying the game. But the Saints scored again soon after, and Ryan and the offense were unable to engineer anymore touchdown drives after that.
Across the board, the offense was pretty solid except for Ryan’s three interceptions and low completion percentage in the game. Michael Turner rushed for 151 yards and one touchdown. Roddy White had 108 yards including his third quarter score, and Tony Gonzalez had a team-high six catches for 89 yards.
Defensively, the team had trouble containing New Orleans’ high-powered offense. They were unable to stop quarterback Drew Brees, who is tied in leading the league in touchdown passes. He had two scores through the air in the game. But the defense was able to score off of Brees’ fumble in the first quarter, when Kroy Biermann recovered the ball and made his way into the endzone.
The Falcons will host the 2-5 Redskins on Sunday at 1 pm.
